Outcomes and Significance
WeVote Surrey holds a unique place in the history of WeVote. It was in Surrey that WeVote first emerged — born out of direct community engagement and the urgent need to support citizens facing compressed timelines, limited resources, and complex institutional processes.
With only 15 days remaining before the proposal was scheduled for City Council consideration, residents faced an exceptionally narrow window to organize, respond, and participate meaningfully in the decision-making process.
During this period, WeVote Surrey supported four peaceful and lawful public demonstrations, culminating in a final gathering of more than 1,200 residents, representing one of the largest instances of civic mobilization in the area’s recent history.
In parallel, the community collected over 8,000 signatures opposing the project, demonstrating the breadth and seriousness of local concern despite significant time, financial, and organizational constraints.
At the outset, the proposal appeared to face only a single vote in opposition.
By November 17, following sustained civic engagement and public scrutiny, the City Council unanimously voted against the project, with all nine councillors voting to reject the proposal.
This outcome represents a rare democratic achievement — a decisive shift driven not by institutional power, but by organized, peaceful, and persistent citizen participation under severe time constraints.
The experience in Surrey shaped the foundation of WeVote’s mission and model.
It demonstrated that when communities are supported with structure, coordination, and accessible civic infrastructure, meaningful democratic outcomes remain possible.
WeVote Surrey is therefore not only a local chapter, but the origin point of WeVote’s broader effort to strengthen democratic participation across communities.
